Subject Tutor – School of Design
Location: Bloomsbury, London
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £35,000–£40,000 per annum, pro rata for part-time hours
Hours: Part time hours available and will be discussed with the successful candidate.

About the roleWe are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Subject Tutor to join our School of Design.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape and deliver an engaging, contemporary design curriculum across our BA, Diploma and Certificate programmes, both on-site and online.
Working closely with the Programme Leader and wider academic team, you will deliver high-quality teaching, practical demonstrations, tutorials and assessments, helping students develop the technical expertise, creative confidence and professional knowledge needed to succeed in the design industry.
Alongside teaching, you will contribute to curriculum development, student recruitment, industry engagement and the wider student experience. You will also help maintain the quality and relevance of our programmes, ensuring they reflect current professional practice and industry developments.

Key responsibilities- Plan, develop and deliver innovative and relevant design curricula in collaboration with the Programme Leader and fellow Subject Tutors.
- Deliver high-quality teaching, practical demonstrations and assessments, providing clear and timely feedback to students.
- Contribute to programme development, annual monitoring and continuous improvement, responding to student and External Examiner feedback.
- Support student recruitment through open days, portfolio reviews and other recruitment activities.
- Provide academic tutorials and guidance to support student progression, engagement and wellbeing.
- Contribute to curriculum planning, timetabling and the effective delivery of programmes.
- Support the appointment, induction and management of Visiting Lecturers as required.
- Work collaboratively with academic, technical and student support colleagues to maintain a positive, inclusive and safe learning environment.
- Maintain professional networks and engage with current design practice to ensure teaching reflects industry standards and innovation.
- Contribute to budgets for teaching materials and equipment, monitoring expenditure within agreed limits.
- Represent West Dean at selected external events and conferences, promoting our design programmes and reputation.
You will have a strong background in design, combining professional knowledge with a passion for teaching and supporting students to achieve their potential.
You will be confident delivering engaging learning experiences, developing curriculum content and providing constructive feedback. You will also be able to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to the ongoing development and promotion of our programmes.
Essential requirements- An undergraduate degree and a postgraduate degree in design or a related subject.
- At least three years’ experience in teaching and learning within design or a related subject.
- Professional experience in the design industry or a related field.
- Experience developing teaching and learning materials.
- Experience of student assessment and providing clear, supportive feedback.
- Experience of supporting student recruitment and admissions in higher education.
- Knowledge of contemporary design practice and the skills required for employment in the sector.
- The ability to plan and organise teaching and communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
- Competence in relevant digital design tools, including AutoCAD, SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite.
- A professional, flexible and supportive approach, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- A postgraduate qualification in teaching and learning, such as a PgCert HE.
- Fellowship of Advance HE.
- Experience of online teaching and student support.
- Familiarity with virtual learning environments, Revit and BIM.
The salary is £35,000–£40,000 per annum, depending on experience, with part-time appointments paid pro rata.
